IDOLM@STER Xenoglossia review

Well Sensei asked me to write something and I recently finished watching IDOLM@STER Xenoglossia so I’ll try to offer you a spoiler-free review ^_^

First of all, if you know IDOLM@STER from the XBOX 360 or PSP games, forget about them, Xenoglossia takes place in an alternate universe with the same characters however they have a slightly altered appearance from their game counterparts.

The story takes place on earth in a not too distant future. In that future the moon exploded and earth is now surrounded by two asteroid belts, the remains of it. Every now and then an asteroid falls down to earth and threatens the peaceful life. Of course every nation protects itself from this danger and for whatever reasons Japan uses giant mechas called iDOLs to crush the asteroids. (It’s Japan after all….. duh) Our story begins when our heroine Amami Haruka wins a local singing idol contest and is invited to Tokyo. Click to continue reading…

During the first few episodes you might ask yourself “how could mechas crushing asteroids be interesting at all?” let me say, a mecha Anime wouldn’t be one if there wouldn’t be some serious action and to my initial surprise the action is well mixed with stories about friendship, love, betrayal and stuff that no one would think of when seeing the Anime for the first time. All of this goes hand in hand with the wide variety of characters that appear and cover all generic Anime roles.

IM@S Charas Haruka

Yeah I had watched some mecha meets girl Animes before like SkyGirls and Strike Witches but in my opinion IDOLM@STER is the best of its kind because it involves a deeper plot and develops the polished characters. As you may have guessed everything has it bad sides, and so has IDOLM@STER too, I for one had wished for a bit more background information, yes there are some flashbacks and explanations but after I watched the last episode I still wanted to know why some events happened like they happened. Speaking of endings, it feels very rushed as do some small parts of the story, which really is a shame since the rest of the Anime is very well paced.

Let’s come to the animation quality. Xenoglossia is nothing outstanding in terms of drawing and animation but certainly not bad either. Sometimes the iDOLs are slightly computer animated with fits well and does not disturb the feeling at all. Mentioning the iDOLs, they are not something revolutionary in terms of mecha design but still unique and it’s believable that humanity actually built them.

In the end I can say IDOLM@STER Xenoglossia is a great Anime (possibly my new favorite Mecha/Girls Anime) and highly enjoyable which isn’t that much of a surprise if you check a few background infos. The responsible company is Sunrise, who already made My-HiME and Mai-Otome which by no means are known to be bad. Well I hoped you liked my very first ever Anime review which hopefully convinced you to watch IDOLM@STER Xenoglossia and I also hope you will find it as great and moving as I did. Me now goes back building my own iDOL in Armored Core: For Answer ^_^

Skyy over and out!

Personal opinion about the ending below (CONTAINS SPOILERS! Mark text to read!):

Well I write this because I don’t like the ending at all, this doesn’t mean it’s bad, I just don’t like it, some people do.

But seriously, why was the death of the iDOLs necessary? Okay something had to stabilize Aurym (what was it in the first place? Yeah a replacement for the moon, but what exactly was it?) but seeing all this technology there sure was another way, I mean Mondenkind had Vulturius and Turiavita a crapload of Ephimetheus with man-made gravity cores so why didn’t they just blow Aurym up with Vulturius and just replaced it with a man-made moon based on the Ephimetheus technology? But no instead the iDOLs sacrafice themselfs and the ending is rushed to death. iDOLs explode, Haruka is seperating from Imber after a ,I have to admit, heartwarming scene through the escape pod system along with the others, iDOLs make a new ?moon? everyone is rescued and follows their normal life without any real showing of emotions after the event or explanations. Harukas “boyfriend” just died we could show a bit of aftermath but no…… just BAM and end….

Endings like this leave me with a very unsatisfied feeling, here especially because there’s hardly any chance for a  second season with the iDOLs pretty much gone (of course I would like to be wrong, maybe the iDOLs cores return somehow because Earth is facing a new thread and we see a new advanced version of iDOLs ^_^)

Non the less the rest of the Anime was great and I’m hoping for a second season no matter how small the chance is^^

I would like to hear other opinions and comments on this but please warn other users if you are going to spoil!
